Men make more money than women in today’s world. It’s been this way since biblical times. “Set the value of a male between the ages of twenty and sixty at 50 shekels of silver, according to the sanctuary shekel; and if it is a female, set her value at 30 shekels.” (Leviticus 27: 3-4). According to Hilary M. Lips of Ranford University, in 2001 white women earned 73.4% of what white men earned.
Many people talk about how women are closing the wage gap, but statistics show that only about four percent of the worlds top companies in diversity have women in leading positions. This is discouraging for the women out there today looking to break into the corporate world. Women who make it to these positions typically work more hours then men, but have lower hourly wages. Why is this? Are women truly inferior to men? There are different valuable characteristics that both sexes hold, but women are not worth 26.6% less than men. Some people believe that women make less because men are more reliable in the work place. Pregnancies and being child care providers is a couple of the reasons that women are thought to be less reliable. Typically in a two parent environment, the woman is expected to be the one to leave work in order to care for the kid’s needs.
The inequality is a substantial difference and has an effect on today’s society and community. If we don’t acknowledge the problem, close the gap and get rid of the glass ceiling now; when will we?

Women should be paid just as much as men, the amount of bigotry and prejudice against women is unbelievable. It is only right that women are treated as equals and paid just as much as men. Growing up in a divorced family, I know first hand how strong women are and that they are just as capable as a man is.
ReplyDeleteWomen are paid less than men, and this probably won't be changing. It is true that women are less reliable (and this is coming from one). I'm not saying it should be this way, but because we are prone to needing work-leave for our mothering duties there is no way around it. There are some fathers who are willing to pull their weight on the paternal responsibilities, but not most. Hopefully someday in the future this can change so we can truely be equals.
ReplyDeleteIn some cases it's true that women are paid less than men. My mom, however, is paid more than my step-father. She also does a lot more work than what she should have to do. I also know at least one stay-at-home dad that takes care of his two children while his wife goes to work. Women are sometimes less reliable, but in some cases they're also control freaks that like to be perfectionists. So equal pay should be available for a woman who is on the same level as any man, and vice versa.
ReplyDeleteThere is a dying breed of males, the sexist. Slowly but surely the men living in the roaring 1920's are dying away. I think when the more sexist elderly CEO's die away, gradually you will watch this gap decrease. Also, women should have to sign up for the draft if they want equal rights, just saying.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it is the sexist C.E.O.s that are the reason more women don't have higher jobs. I think it is more the older women who do not hold positions. When the women get younger and a higher percentage every year are going to college, the number of high paid women will naturally get higher.
ReplyDeletePay should be set based on the quality of the work being done by an individual, not the sex of the worker. Hopefully, with the increasing amount of females now graduating with college degrees though, we will eventually see this pay gap disappear.
